The Information I Collect

Clients and Enquiries

Most of the personal information I process is provided to me directly when a person makes an enquiry via email, over the phone, or via the website, and when I first begin work with a client. This includes:

  • Contact details

  • GP Surgery

  • Next of Kin

  • Session Notes

This Website

I also process personal information indirectly via this website, which uses cookies and collects personal data to run the website and learn about site activity in an aggregate manner. This information is shared with the website analytics provider Wix. To read more about how this website works and how users can give consent or refuse non-essential cookies, please refer to the Cookie Policy.

Data collected includes information about a user’s browser, network, and device, web pages a user visited prior to coming to this website, and their IP address. Wix needs the data to run this website, and to protect and improve its platform and services. Wix analyses the data in a de-personalised, aggregate form. Additionally, information collected may include details about the visitor’s use of this website, including clicks, internal links, pages visited, scrolling, searches and timestamps.

Lawful Basis

Under the GDPR, the lawful basis I rely on for processing the above information is consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting me.

How I Store Information

Clients and Enquiries

Contact and personal information will be stored on a password controlled online management system.

I will destroy data (contact details and session notes) when they are no longer useful, usually after the work has ended, unless otherwise specifically agreed with a client.

This Website

Personal data collected for website analytics is stored by Wix, who acts as Data Processor. Their Privacy Policy is available here.

Confidentiality Notice

Confidentiality may, on rare occasions, need to be breached if I feel ethically bound to seek assistance on a client’s behalf or on behalf of others. This would be if I am made aware that a client is at risk of harm or causing harm to others, or others they refer to are at risk of harm. This will always, where possible, be in discussion with a client unless circumstances prevent this. In rare cases such as this, I will, where appropriate, endeavour to inform a client about what has been communicated and to whom. The instances where I am bound by law to disclose information are those relating to drug trafficking, drug money laundering and acts of terrorism.

As a professional requirement, I attend individual and peer group supervision to discuss and explore aspects of my practice. Clients are not identifiable within this process. My supervisor also works in adherence to the BACP/NCPS Ethical Framework as do my peer supervision colleagues who I will sometimes share elements of my practice with.

In the event of me becoming incapacitated by illness or death, I have a “counsellor’s will” that will be activated and responded to, as per my instruction, by a trusted colleague who is also bound by the BACP/NCPS Ethical Framework and is familiar with the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulations). I will review this privacy notice annually, unless something significant arises that means I need to address anything sooner.

Agreements and Rights

All clients are required to consent to the bounds of the Counselling Agreement and to client data collection as per this policy. Clients will be notified of any changes to this policy and have the right to withdraw their consent at any time. Clients also have the right to ask for their data to be deleted or amended. You can ask for a copy of your data in a subject access request and I will provide you with this, free of charge, within 30 days.

In general, under data protection law, you have rights including:

  • Your right of access - You have the right to ask us for copies of your personal information.

Cookie Policy

“We,” “us," and “our” means Rachel Flowers trading as Alone and Together Counselling. For the purposes of this policy, the term “website” refers to our site www.aloneandtogethercounselling.co.uk and its subdomains.

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are and how we use them on our website. You are encouraged to read the entire policy in order to understand what information we collect using cookies, how that information is used, and how you can refuse cookies.

Your access and use of this website is subject to this policy, our Privacy Policy, and to any separate Terms of Use for this website or our services that may be in effect from time to time.

What Are Cookies?

A cookie is a text file that is stored on your device or computer’s hard disk by a web page server. Cookies are used by almost all websites and track your movements around a website, allowing the site to for example record information or create a tailored functionality based on your current and previous visits.

Cookies are uniquely designated to you. Only the web server in the domain that issued the cookie to you can read the cookie. Although cookies don’t typically contain personal information that could identify a user, we may hold personal information about you that could potentially be linked to the details stored in and gathered from cookies.

A cookie can be of either a "persistent" or "session" type:

  • Persistent cookies are stored through your web browser as a file on your device and stay there until a set expiry date (unless you delete it first). They can be read by the website that placed them when you revisit that site at a later date.

  • Session cookies expire when you close the web browser and are automatically deleted at that point. Typically they store an anonymous ‘session ID’ and don’t collect any personal information or details.

A cookie can also be either “essential” or “non-essential”:

  • Essential cookies are considered necessary for our website to function properly, in order to deliver the content that you ask of it, and will be automatically placed when you visit this site or use certain functionalities.

  • Non-essential cookies may relate to added functionalities such as advertising and marketing, or analysing traffic. We need to obtain your consent for these cookies to be placed on your device.

Other ways of categorising cookies include:

  • Performance cookies let us monitor and improve how our website performs overall, for example by counting visits and how long users spend on each page;

  • Functionality cookies let a website keep track of browsing choices you’ve made, preferences, or services you’ve requested such as viewing a video, generally with anonymised information.

  • Targeting cookies collect information about your specific visit to a website, including what pages you viewed and the links you clicked, in order to for example tailor any advertising displayed on the website.

  • First and third-party cookies are set by the website you’re currently visiting, versus set by other external websites, respectively. Third-party cookies could be placed for example when adverts by a 3rd party are displayed on a site.

How You Can Refuse Cookies

You can opt in or out of non-essential cookies on our website using our cookie banner.

You can also block both essential and non-essential cookies at any time by using your browser’s settings, where you can refuse all or some cookies as well as clear existing cookies. Most web browsers are automatically set to accept cookies, however you can generally modify this setting to decline instead. If you block essential cookies in this manner, this may prevent you from accessing parts of our website.

The following links outline how you can change your cookie settings on some of the most commonly used browsers:

Cookies Placed by this Website and How They’re Used

  • Essential cookies. We may use cookies to remember information that changes the way the Service behaves or looks, such as a user’s language preference on the Service.

  • Analytics cookies. We may use analytics cookies to track information how the Service is used so that we can make improvements. We may also use analytics cookies to test new advertisements, pages, features or new functionality of the Service to see how our users react to them.
